About Us

This site uses a rss/rdf and atom Feed crawler that fetches the newsfeed from various sites and displays them in one central website.

Current Features

Feed-Crawler

The feed-crawler fetches the newsfeed from the websites, parses them and stores the informations in a database.
Currently the crawler supports The If-Modified-Since HTTP header to minimize the number of feeds to transmit.

Feed-Parser

The Parser currently support the feed-formats RSS, RDF and atom. If there are newer ones they will be supported, too.

Website

Well, currently you have the frontpage, which shows all newer news (50 to be exactly). You can limit the language you see with the flags in the link line.
If you click on the bold header, you are taken to the site where the news are from, clicking on the logo/description takes you to the news archive of that feed.
Feedlist is a list of available feeds giving you the possibility to go to the corresponding Site, fetch the raw newsfeed or read the archive.
The Calendar shows you the news from a given day.
A form to enter new newsfeeds is also available. The robot will crawl that news shortly after you entered the url.

The feed will appear usually in 5 min or less, unless something is wrong with the url or the feed. (damaged feeds are normal, sadly).
That's all there is atm. Check the future features to see whats coming sooner or later.
Right now, the main site itself does not have a newsfeed itself. There is a simple reason for that:
You are be able to create a free account using a username, a password and an optionally (yes, optionally) email address.
You have the option to pick the newsfeeds out of the list you want, and you'll get only those in your newsfeed and on your personal site at <yourusername>.feedcollector.org. Your personal site will show only your wanted newsfeeds.

Near-future Features

Feed-Crawler

Support for gzip/deflate compression.
Better support for non-standard and misbehaving "chunked" transfer modes of some webservers.

Feed-Parser

Better support for broken newsfeeds. Yes, there are some feeds out there that spread poorly formatted newsfeeds.
As soon as one of them is detected, the parser gets another exception rule to parse that. Right now 5 different Date/Timestamp formats are supported.
